The World Innovation Forum-Kuala Lumpur 2013 (WIF-KL 2013) aspired to create a new culture of innovation and was the epicentre of economic growth, emerging technologies and innovation in Asia. WIF-KL 2013 was jointly organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Malaysian Innovation Foundation/Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM). More than 1,500 delegates, from over 25 countries, participated in the forum and more than 10,000 visitors visited the exhibition. We were given the task of producing 2,000 handmade bags for the delegates.
Equipped with conscious and thoughtful designing, the bag can be converted into a storage display to organise your household items, or a hanging vertical ‘planters box’. The bag also contained a pack of Curly Lettuce, Morning Glory, Mustard Greens and Bok Choy seeds for delegates to experiment with! Seeds are provided courtesy of our friends at Eats, Shoots & Roots, a permaculture based social enterprise in Malaysia revolutinizing urban farming and sustainable living.
We chose to design these bags with banners to bring attention to the urban waste problem. With every job that comes our way, we try to embed sustainable practices in design. This project alone saved 1888m2 (0.5 metric ton) of banners from the landfill. That is the equivalent of 10 tennis courts of waste! The project was also an opportunity to spread awareness about the global waste problem, while showcasing creative ways to reuse materials and to reduce the amount of discarded PVC advertising banners that end up in the Malaysian landfill.
Along with our collaboration with YIM, we also managed to engage with Generating Opportunities for Learning Disabled (GOLD) Foundation. Members of the foundation took part in making the bag. The project was called Donate Your Idea (DYI).
